BASIL Cinnamon Seeds

Inc. GST + FREE Shipping

As its name suggests, Basil Cinnamon is an aromatic basil variety that has a spicy, fragrant aroma and flavour. The leaves of Basil Cinnamon naturally produce methyl cinnamate, giving the basil leaves a distinct flavour that resembles cinnamon, making it a popular choice for teas, baked goods including cookies and desserts, as well as use in flavouring salads, pastas, jellies and heirloom vinegars. Other aromatic uses include the addition of Basil Cinnamon leaves into potpourri. In the garden, Basil Cinnamon plants are sometimes planted near summer crops such as tomatoes as well as roses to discourage a range of insect pests, particularly whiteflies. Plants of Basil Cinnamon make a great addition not just to the herb and vegetable garden, but also planted amongst ornamental plants as the purple stems and pink and purple flowers of Basil Cinnamon provide a cheerful touch of cottage colour. For the space novices out there, Basil Cinnamon was taken into space by the Space Shuttle Endeavour during STS-118 and grown in an experiment in low Earth orbit on the International Space Station. This variety is just as much fun back on earth! The variety Basil Cinnamon has been selected for its superior cultivation characteristics, most specifically the delayed onset of flowering, which generally marks the end of the harvesting period for common basil varieties. Whilst Basil Cinnamon will flower like all basil varieties, regular deep trimming, will prolong the vegetative phase of growth, ensuring you continue to harvest bunches and bunches of tender crispy basil for many months. In cooler regions Basil Cinnamon is grown as an annual, however in warmer climates or sheltered aspects, Basil Cinnamon can often be grown as a frost-tender perennial, providing several years of joy.
