Salvia Hispanica Chia Seeds

Inc. GST + FREE Shipping

This selection of Salvia Hispanica Chia is the premium black seeded chia variety originating from central and South America, where it has been used since ancient times as a meal and herb, where its seemingly miraculous (nutritional) properties were essentially worshipped. Whilst Chia continues to be a staple in many parts of South America to this day, Chia's nutritional benefits are much more widely recognised and is now one of the ancient grains that has been embraced on a global scale, in recent years. Chia seeds are often considered a superfood, because of the high concentration of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, plenty of high quality protein, several essential vitamins (A, B D) and minerals, and the highly sought after antioxidants which have been shown to have enormous health benefits. For these reasons, Chia seeds are often used as either a meal base (pinole), or as a supplement added to a wide range of meals to improve the nutritional profile, and are also used to grow as a nutritious sprout. The nutritional advantages are not restricted to humans, and as a result Chia seeds and sprouts are also used for improving the diets of animals and pets.

Salvia Hispanica Chia is a blue purple flowering annual plant from the Salvia family grown as a flowering herb and is a great option for attracting pollinators to the garden. Salvias varieties like Chia are typically planted out after the last frosts, and will flower throughout the year, and will go to seed as the weather starts to cool, typically in Autumn.

As the largest genus in the mint family, the Salvia genus consists of more than 900 species, consisting of small and large plants, annual and perennials, and there is sure to be variety that is suited for your particular garden application. At The Climbing Fig we stock what we consider to be the highest performing varieties of both ornamental and edible salvia, and are always on the lookout for worthy additions. Anyone who has a particular interest in learning more about salvia plant varieties, should check out a feature article titled The Joy of Salvia which was published in the Gardening Australia Magazine in June 2012. The article is available on the Gardening Australia website. As the article is a few years old now, several new varieties are now available, however it is a great read for anyone with an interest in learning how salvia plants can be used.
